The craft industry of semiprecious stones, which is several thousand years old as revealed by the prestigious archaeological sites in the Indus Valley, is still alive : it is carried out today in the North of India, at Cambay, in the state of Gujarat.

Here is a unique opportunity for drafting ethno-archaeological reference databases as guidance for the analysis and interpretation of different corpuses of carnelian beads.

These refererence databases have been constucted in collaboration with specialists in the most varied areas : prehistorians specializing in stone and ornamental technology (Jacques Pélegrin, Francesco d'Errico, Blanche Barthélemy de Saizieu, Marie-Louise Inizan) researchers in kinetics (Blandine Bril, Gilles Diétrich), economics (Pierre Matarasso), and even a ballistics engineer (Antonio Sela).

Using an ethno-archaeological approach, Valentine Roux derives from these reference databases, transcultural interpretation rules that can be applied to diverse bead corpuses: the beads of Nausharo, Kalibangan, Mesopotamia and lastly, the beads of the Indus.

From the methodological viewpoint, this book is a genuine epistemological manifesto.
